Grants Pass to Crescent City Highway 199 Road Guide - Oregon & California Redwood HighwayHighway 199 Road GuideIntroductionHighway 199 is the main travel corridor between Redwood National Park, California and Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. This guide points out local history, explains the geology and provides information on other things to do in this 80 mile-long corridor from Grants Pass in the Rogue River Valley of Oregon to Crescent City on the California redwood coast. Two versionsThis guide is divided into nine sections with each section having two versions. One version is for those who are traveling form California toward Oregon and the other for those traveling in the opposite direction. The orange block in the upper left tells you the travel direction for the guide you are viewing. The tan bar in the upper right provides a link that switches you to the other direction. The "NEXT" button at the bottom of each page will take you sequentially to the next section for which ever direction you are traveling. Preparing for the tripThe Highway 199 guide points out several side trips that each have their own guide and information about things to see and do. Each of these road guides will help you find features along the way but none of them are intended to take the place of a topographical map or Forest Service map. When traveling off the main highway, always carry a map showing back country roads to be certain to know your location in case you encounter an emergency and need to find the quickest route back to town. High clearance or four-wheel-drive is recommended on some of these side trips. Assure your car has tires that are suitable for driving over rough, gravel roads. Some of these side trips may take you to places that are more than 10 miles from the nearest help. It is best to carry emergency supplies such as extra water and a warm jacket. A day pack would be a good idea to carry along incase you need to walk for help. There are gas stations at several points along Highway 199 but it is recommended you top-off at the nearest convenient location before departing. Beginning the Tour
