Simpson-Reed Loop Trail, California

Map of Simpson-Reed and Peterson old growth redwood forest wheelchair accessible, barrier free loop trail, Highway 199, Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, Crescent City, northwest California coastThe Simpson-Reed accessible loop is a gravel surfaced trail that is a very popular stop for travelers on Highway 199. About half way through the loop, a second loop trail can be found that crosses a bridge and takes visitors to the Peterson Grove where more scenic forest can be viewed.  The two loops combined offer about a mile of relatively level trail through an ancient redwood forest.

Directions

The directions for the Simpson-Reed Loop Trail and other trails in the redwood forest can be found on the Redwood Forest Loop Drive. From Crescent City: Drive north on Highway 101 and take the Highway 199 off ramp. Drive about three miles and look for Walker Road on the left. The parking area for the trailhead is just past Walker Road with parking in turnouts on both sides of Highway 199. There are no alternative parking areas for the trailheads and if no parking is available at the turnouts, you must drive about a mile to the bridge over Smith River for the safest place to turn around. Traffic moves quickly and visibility in both directions is poor. If you need to cross the road, do so with added caution. Walker Road  is a few hundred feet from the trailhead to the Simpson-Reed Loop Trail and has a loop trail with less crowds and easier parking.
